LA Times: Front page story, or ad?

There's a bit of a controversy brewing over a new money-making effort by newspapers with something akin to an advertorial. I know papers need to make money, but ouch!

And in the same online column there's this from the Daily Bruin.

well at least it's on the bottom of the page on not stamped in the middle like that sticker machine they have used only a couple of times. I wonder how much that thing cost the company? If it keeps people working I am all for it.

It's not much different than so-called local "news" shows pumping up the affiliate network's prime-time lineup within the newscast, thinly disguised as a legitimate story. At least this is well-labeled as an ad.

I agree with the first poster -- if this keeps the lights on and good journalism flowing, so be it.

I've been to L.A. before...it's a sprawling city with endless suburbs. When I traveled through there in a bus, it took about three hours to get through the region. With all that area, they couldn't find any other hard news to put on the front page? I mean, not even something as mundane as Jack Nicholson getting his Valtrex prescription refilled?
