Flint Journal scoops its workers with Mlive announcement

Here's the scoop from Mlive on the Flint Journal.

I'll have more later.

Here's more info and a letter from the publisher.

Sometimes it sucks being right.

I'm as mad, frustrated, sad and indignant as I have ever been so I will resist striking out and saying what I really feel right now.

I would imagine Circulation and Production will take the brunt of the layoffs. And Circulation management will probably be decimated. Many Journal folks I've talked with are kicking themselves for not taking the large buyout from 18 months ago. Sad.

A sad day indeed, for the handful of fine journalists who remain at TFJ. As one who tok the Great Buyout of 07, I feel fortunate, and only more sadness we were not able to convince others to take it then. Looks like us "characters" were right after all. But part of the awful taste in my mouth is that the current editor will likely remain, with his right-hand henchwoman, to further pillage and poison the journalistic waters. And that Tony Deering survives is another huge joke. Let's hope these "leaders" also suffer consequences, such as lower pay, frozen pensions, etc, that their minions are facing. They are the one who should be let go, not the productive lower rungs who actually give readers a reason to keep taking this decimated rag. Urinal, indeed...

Let's try, as hard as it might be to tone down the personal attacks, me included.

It's bad enough just to deal with the substance, but let's not get too personal.

I have been loathe to use the reject button, but I will do so to keep things at least somewhat civil.

Feel free however to vent about the policies and decisions that led to this mistake.

If financial bottom lines were the only consideration in the paper's success, it's obvious by now that big changes would have been made in management -- the "flattening", as Dave Sharp likes to call it. For you Journal readers, that's just code for a clearer division between who is really "management" and those of you who are merely their local viceroys.

Nevertheless, sycophancy pays. Just one "old school" manager is still making about two salaries' worth of younger, more adaptable workers.

This was their big opportunity to rid themselves of anyone who may pose a threat to the old ways.

"Daily news does not stop June 1"

But if you don't own a computer you'll have to wait for it until the 4th!

Swell..

Hi Jim,
I just want to thank you for getting this info out there for the Flint Journal masses. Some people out there hate the fact that you did this. But I preferred to be informed about this ahead a time. To go into work today and find out this news without any sort of warning would have far worse. Even though people knew this could be coming at anytime, there seemed to be a lot of people in shock. Guys pissed off, woman sad and almost crying. This totally sucks.

Financial thaumaturgy- that’s all it is- didn’t work the first or second time- won’t work this time- as long as the same warlocks and witches are stirring the cauldron the results will be the same- failure.
