AnnArbor.com: A train wreck in the making

OK, I couldn't stay away from the newspaper news that long. Jim Carty has put up Part II of the "content director" of AnnArbor.com's interview.

Except for the obviously biased headline, I'm going to withhold any comment and just let you read it for yourself here.

You should put Paper Tiger No More and Inside Out on your favorites list if you are hungry for Booth news. For example here's a good analysis on Inside Out.

I'll be back in a couple of weeks. (Or sooner, if something important pops up.)

You aren't off base in your headline about what's coming with the new improved Booth Ann Arbor blog. The comments by the new "content director" are pure B.S. But then, as a former Boothie, I would expect nothing less.

Oh, AnnArbor.com will be new! Exciting! DIfferent! Its just that its management will be the same old Booth.

Whatever reporters or "content providers" they get for this thing better make sure and line up a second or third job, maybe waiting tables and stocking shelves at Walmart.

Jim, what Booth management is doing is just tragic. In Flint, reporters' salaries have been cut in some cases to $12 and $14 an hour. Some of the most experienced reporters are being cut to what they made more than a decade ago as rookies.

This is not a career, it's indentured servitude. How these people are going to live is a mystery to me.

You've got these publishers saying that Flint and Saginaw and Bay City are no longer daily newspapers, so they're going to pay weekly newspaper wages and salaries. Yeah, check back with the surviving staff come the summer and see if they aren't still working brutal daily newspaper type hours. They will of course still be working like crack whores, but for chump change.

Did you hear about the message the editor in Flint sent out to his employees? Let's not be negative about the screwing you're taking, no need to let the public know about it.

I'm told that the Flint publisher, as he dropped the bomb this week, told his employees they expect to lose "a few thousand" readers as they stop being a daily. I hope he's right, that it's only a few thousand, but again, I'm afraid the truth will be much worse -- just like the great predications about the wonderful new A2 website.

Part three is up:

I realize he's talking off the cuff here but this is funny to read:

"I read some real interesting stuff on the Las Vegas Sun, which Rob Curley is involved in. They're trying to do something that sounded very interesting, and that I found very interesting"

"Hassan is not here on the ground right now, for a lot of reasons. He is neck deep in working with the development of the site, although he's with us every step of the way. Hassan, I would describe as way out there - WAY out there."

Here's his way WAY

out there website:

http://www.mapgoblin.com/

"I should know his title. We're pretty loose on titles. I may have to get that and send you it. Right now, we have a four person team - Matt, Laurel, Hassan and me. He's the technical guy, the innovation guy, the digital guy."

"Not that I can think of right now. Those kinds of decisions are made above me. I can't tell you anything intelligent about that."

Just call me the "guy out of a job in two months guy"
