FJ looking for full-time reporter

There's an opening for a full-time reporter at my old employer.

The Flint Journal — a newspaper that prides itself on investigative journalism and award-winning online news reporting — is looking for an entry-level reporter. We want a reporter who can dissect tough issues, sniff out hard-news stories and write compelling features. We also want a reporter who brings a passion for technology and online reporting. We’re looking for that perfect combination: Someone who can go beyond the inverted pyramid and can incorporate blogging, social media and sometimes shooting video into their reporting. We don’t expect you to already have all these skills, but we want journalists who are on the cutting edge and eager to adapt to the next best technology.

I'm sorry, but I haven't been able to quit laughing since I first read this about 30 minutes ago. They want an entry-level reporter (read poorly paid, last I heard their entry level reporters made about $15 per hour) who can sniff out hard news, do investigative work, write compelling features, do some video work, blog and social media. That's entry level? And really, outside of a couple of FOIA based stories, when is the last time you read investigative work out of our fine city's daily paper? And please, when it comes to award-winning online journalism, the only thing they can talk about is the serial stabber story. Bless the 24-year old recent college grad who takes this job. Good luck....

Something's missing from the ad:

We want a reporter who can dissect tough issues, sniff out hard-news stories and write compelling features for $12 an hour, plus is willing to work 50+ hours a week without overtime and pay 25% of his/her health care costs.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I'd rather work as Charlie Sheen's publicist than for the Flint Journal.

I guess I should have known better, but I posted the job opening because I know that there are folks still in the market for jobs.

I get the frustration, but there just may be some young journalist looking for a start.

"Sniff out hard-news stories?" Who writes this crap?

Okay, I understand the sentiments expressed in the comments.(Where is this alleged "investigative" reporting?) But imagine yourself as a kid fresh out of J School. You'd have a real shot at this job. You could start working at a daily paper in a city — for all the wrong reasons — that would be fascinating to cover. You'd probably get frustrated because you couldn't cover it with the depth it deserves, but you'd still be getting some amazing experience in journalism and life. And at that point in life you'd be used to being broke.

Maybe I'm just bitter because when I got out of journalism school in 1990, I went to more than a dozen interviews with daily papers, and I'd never been treated so shabbily by various papers. They basically laughed at me for even considering working for a daily paper fresh out of school. It wasn't so much the fact they didn't offer me the job, but how they treated me.

So maybe some youngster can use this as a launching pad to bigger and better things.

Or maybe they get so disillusioned they go into PR.
