Editors, and how bad ones are ruining the newspaper business

MLive moves Red Wings up front
OK, I ripped MLive previously for not prominently displaying the Detroit Red Wings news up front on the various newspaper web pages. This morning on the Flint page, the Red Wings were front and center. So props from here.

The Journal started late once again this morning and still didn't get a Wings story in the paper. Thumbs wayyyy down.
Yes, I was only speaking of the MLive location and coverage of the Red Wings. No game coverage of the Wings in Sunday's paper. Big mistake. There was a "breaking news" story, a shooting from Friday night.
And, let's see . . . the next two scheduled games of the Stanley Cup Finals are Tuesday and Friday, no? 'Guess that'll take care of any souvenir front-page posters should the Red Wings win.
Eh, who cares? If it's not a feature of kids on BMX bikes, it's not worthy, anyway.
Seeing the job ad today for part-time copy editors/page designers at Valley gave me such a warm and fuzzy feeling. Especially the part where it said a college degree is "preferred."
I almost applied, until I realized I could make more money drawing unemployment.
Sunday's Journal was awful in every way, shape or form. Not only did the paper miss the Wings' victory, but it also buried the Tigers' victory behind the pitching of Edwin Jackson, my new hero, in Sports.
The new uber-editor's column was a joke -- I can't believe the only reader communications were positive when the past week's revamped Journal was so lame it had to borrow Tiny Tim's crutch.
What, in God's name, are the new bosses trying to do by eliminating the "By" from bylines and running letters to the editor as from "The Voice of So-and So." I've never seen any such style in any other newspaper. It's almost as if the Journal, crushed down to appearing 3 days a week, wants to alienate the few remaining readers by printing a no-sense-to-it hodgepodge that traditional newspaper readers will abhor.
I am very close to ending my Journal subscription even though I get the paper delivered at half price. To be honest, the only reason I haven't quit already are the Meijer inserts and the Sunday coupons. I feel so sorry for the staff that's left behind.
Welcome to Bay City's world for the past three years, Gene.
There has been -- and always will be -- a major disconnect between the uber-"editor" and the reader. He simply can't be bothered by the reader. That's a sometimes-messy task, and besides, it would require thought, work and effort, three words absent from his vocabulary.
As for all those cosmetic changes that bring nothing to the table -- changed bylines, changed header styles . . . AND WE MEAN IT! -- well, stuff like this requires a lot less thought, work and effort than things of a substantive nature, yet can still justify lots and lots of meetings, thus giving the impression that there is actual forward progress.
Your guess regarding the feedback is spot on, too. The ratio of furious readers to people who actually think the new product is an improvement is running about 200-1. And I think the '1' just came over from Bangladesh.
And, yeah, you can cancel your subscription, but you may want to set aside 10 minutes of your day for it while you wait your turn in the phone queue.

Save yourself a couple bucks. Meijer inserts and coupons are available online.

Whats going on with your Wings? They are down 2 nothing as I type this. Looks like the cup is going to be going to Pittsburg.
