Flint Journal building: The rumors were not off

The Flint Journal is reporting today what I reported on Monday. Scooped 'em again.

LOL Way to go Jim. Although your use of the word "scoop" and its intended definition no longer applies to news gathering efforts these days. It's about sharing. It' about linking. It's about connections. In a coincidence my new real job put me in contact with a couple of "old" journalists form the Boothie groups (two different newspapers) one staying with the local paper, the other having recently departed. Both agreed that the new world of journalism for these Michigan news operations is nothing like the old. The one staying said it's more about keeping a job than any old idealism about the fourth estate. There is no "scooping" just get the info and get it out there. Copy editing is no longer necessary since most folks get there "news" from blogs and community chats and getting the "news" and getting it fast is far more important than getting it right. Remember the days of memorizing the style book, no longer necessary. Everything can be corrected quickly. Also important is the new conversation between reporter and commenters. Commenters are making the news. the more comments you illicit the greater likely you get a pat on the back. And if you can keep the comments going by interjecting, all the better. It's a community conversation. The news gatherers are just there to put it on the page, err, whatever you call it these days. Way to go Scoop!

"Way to go Jim"? Geez! People have been talking about this for weeks, ever since White was spotted walking through the building during business hours. I had at least two friends who work there tell me about it more than a month ago. You guys make sure you don't separate a shoulder patting yourselves on the back!

Here's something that hasn't changed:
Pats on the back don't pay the rent.

Actually, it was a joke. But you would think a good newspaper would have reported the news before the rumor mill put it out for everyone else to see.

Guess the business desk didn't see White walking through the building?

It's my understanding the business desk didn't see White because they were in the new digs coffee bar figuring out how to do a time-lapse video for some reason. Rim shot...I'm here all week!

Apparently you lack the ability to recognize sarcasm. How sad. Lots of us knew about these rumors, they've been floating around for weeks. It's one thing to know "People have been talking about this for weeks" and another to do the job and report on it.

Got a question, are the newspapers no longer going by their names like Kalamazoo Gazette and Grand Rapids Press. Is everything now MLive Grand Rapids or MLive Kalamzoo?

Anonymous 07:41, maybe if you had changed with the times and not been padlocked to 1975 you'd still be in the business. Are you still using rabbit ears on your black-and-white TV and trotting to the outhouse when nature calls? (Rim shot ... I'm here all month!)

Try printing a headline that says "Rumors around Flint suggest that Mott Foundation may or may not buy old Flint Journal building that hasn't been put up for sale yet" and see how far that gets you. There's no pleasing some people, I guess.
